The smoke alarms were a lifesaver for Linda Hays.
The piercing noise roused the great-grandmother from her bed early Monday morning. She looked down and saw flames leaping at an old wooden chest.
Police say a stranger -- an arsonist -- is to blame.
"How could you? How could you do something like this? Have you no conscience?" asked Hays.

Three people escaped without injury when a fire sparked by a burning candle erupted in their apartment unit on Ennis Creek Road late Monday night.
The three occupants escaped before firefighters arrived, said Chief Sam Phillips of Clallam County Fire District No. 2.
The fire in Apartment 4 at 2447 E.
