The North Star fire burning on the Colville Indian Reservation has grown to 147,000 acres and is only three percent contained. Fire crews reopened Highway 155 on Monday between Nespelem and Omak but delays can still be expected because of the firefighting activity. They have been able to keep homes from burning in the area and they are making sure it does not come any closer to town.

The Alder Lake Fire burning west of Elbe has grown to 150 acres as it continues moving east. Steep rugged terrain is making the firefight difficult, and Forest Service officials say the fire could spread to state DNR land. About 60 people are working this wildfire sparked by lightning on August 11.

The Stevens County Sheriff's Office was called in to investigate the theft of a camera from an Arden fire station. The Spokesman Review reports that crews from the all-volunteer fire department saw two men in hoodies running away from a truck parked outside the station early Monday. Fire Chief Joe Paccerelli says the thieves stole a dashboard camera that has footage of crews battling the Marble Valley fire, which has burned more than 3,000 acres northwest of Addy.

Firefighters from as far as Australia and New Zealand have arrived in the West as massive wildfires raging in Washington state and elsewhere in the region taxed resources and led officials to put out a wide call for help. In Washington, a series of fires raging in the north-central part of the state that earlier killed three firefighters has now grown to become the largest in state history, fire spokesman Rick Isaacson said Monday.

Winds shifted 180 degrees on Engine 642 as it headed up Woods Canyon Road about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday to fight the newly discovered Twisp River Fire. Inside were four firefighters. The engine somehow went off the road as flames approached. Three of the firefighters were later found deceased, inside the fire engine, said John Phipps, lead on the Coordinated Response Protocol Team that is investigating the deaths.
