Whatcom County firefighters continue to help as wildfires burn near electricity-generating facilities

Wildfires near the town of Newhalem in the upper Skagit River Valley continue to burn, but they posed no immediate threat to facilities and buildings on Sunday, Aug. 23. A statement issued by the National Park Service on Sunday morning said eight fires of a total 3,900 acres are burning in the area, known collectively as the Upper Skagit Complex Fire.

Virginia battalion chief criticizes CSX over delayed response at 2014 derailment

FDNY cadet diversity plan ripped by firefighters' union

A new fire cadet program being developed by the FDNY could help move minorities to the head of the hiring line - but not without objection from the firefighters' union, the Daily News has learned. Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro will testify in favor of the proposal at a Monday meeting with Department of Citywide Administrative Services officials, sources said.

Witness records Florida firefighter driving around stopped school bus

VIDEO - A Florida firefighter is getting heat after someone shot cellphone video of him driving around a stopped school bus. In the video posted to Facebook, he got mad at the parents who were yelling at him to stop. The video shows a ma, shot on Thursday, shows a man in a red SUV driving around a school bus that was stopped with its stop sign out and lights flashing, while the bus driver was picking up elementary school children.

Cleveland chief addresses charges against firefighters accused of outside employment violations

Thirty-five Cleveland firefighters accused of violating the department's outside employment policies either failed to request permission to work a second job, worked too many hours on that job, or both, Chief Patrick Kelly said in an interview Friday. Kelly found cause to bring the charges after an internal investigation revealed that firefighters working for de-icing company AeroMag 2000 abused the department's secondary employment policy.
