South Carolina fire department mourns death of veteran firefighter

The Columbia Fire Department is mourning the death of one of their own when a 25-year-veteran firefighter died Sunday after falling ill earlier in July. Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said Firefighter Tyron Weston, 51, fell ill on July 3 and was on his way to recovery when he died Sunday morning. Jenkins said Weston has been a member of the Columbia Fire Department since August 1990.

Surveillance shows arson at Lacey coffee stand

VIDEO: A Lacey coffee stand was set on fire last week and the arsonist was caught on camera as he set the fire. The arson occurred on Wednesday at about 4 a.m. at the Bongiorno Brew Espresso stand at 4914 Lacey Blvd. SE. The man rode up on a bicycle, shattered a window, lit a prepared incendiary device and tossed it inside, according to police.

New Dog raises alarm during fire at Spokane Valley apartments

A puppy named Bonita is credited with alerting a Spokane Valley family to a fire early Monday that heavily damaged their apartment complex. Bonita started barking around 9 a.m. when a row of garages at the Broadway Square Apartments, 11910 E. Broadway Ave., caught fire. The racket alerted the dog’s owner, Tara Peters, who was at home with her 4-year-old son, Anthony.

Concurrent blazes spread Yakima firefighters thin

As Yogi Berra would say, it was déjà vu all over again for Yakima firefighters. For the second time in less than a week, firefighters were simultaneously contending with a brush fire and two house fires Sunday night that pushed the city’s firefighters to the limit. Last Wednesday, close to 100 firefighters were kept busy at simultaneous fires that destroyed a home on South 25th Avenue, damaged another house on Conestoga Boulevard and scorched about 5 acres off Pecks Canyon that threatened several homes.

FDNY recruit gets third chance to pass training academy after collecting top firefighter pay

An FDNY recruit is getting a third chance to pass the training academy after collecting top firefighter pay for a year in desk jobs, sources told The Post. Choeurlyne Doirin-Holder, 39 — one of four women among 320 current probies in training — failed midway through a Fire Academy class in 2013, and returned to her former job as an EMT.
