Worker seriously injured in fire at Tukwila auto shop

An employee was rushed to the hospital with serious burns following an overnight fire at an auto shop in Tukwila. Crews were dispatched to the scene, in the 19600 block of Orillia Road South, at about 11:45 p.m. Monday after receiving a 911 call reporting a fire from an unknown source, said a Tukwila fire official.

Fire in abandoned building blocks road near Mukilteo

A fire in an abandoned building blocked part a key road near Mukilteo for hours. People saw flames shooting out of the building in the 13400 block of Mukilteo Speedway about 3 a.m. Tuesday. Neighbors say they believe the building is empty but there may have been transients living there. A passerby took cellphone video of huge flames shooting 20 to 30 feet into the air.

Judge refuses Rhode Island firefighters' restraining order request over shift changes

A judge on Monday refused to issue a temporary restraining order sought by Providence firefighters to stop the city from moving ahead with shift changes. Mayor Jorge Elorza on Sunday implemented a new schedule that has firefighters working a 56-hour work week. At the same time, the number of platoons has been reduced from four to three.

New York town rejects fire department SAFER grant

In a close vote Monday night, the City Council extinguished a $288,000 federal grant that would have funded two vacant firefighter positions. In February, council members voted, 4-1, to give Fire Chief Dale C. Herman permission to apply for the Federal Emergency Management Administration funding, but required that they have the final say on whether to accept the grant.

California wildfire jumps containment line, spreading fast

A fast-moving wildfire already burning more than 62,000 acres across three northern California counties has crossed a highway in several locations and is "making a run to the north." The Rocky Fire dramatically spread over the weekend to cover parts of Colusa, Lake and Yolo counties. The size of the fire was last reported at 62,000 acres, which is nearly 97 square miles, with 12% containment.
