Pierce Co. brush fires contained, residents told to stay alert

Seven different fire departments have finally contained two large brush fires sparked Saturday evening in Pierce County. As of 1 p.m. Sunday, a containment perimeter had been completed so firefighters can focus on the hot spots remaining in the interior, Central Pierce Fire said. "I never thought that would happen here," resident Carrie Margo said.

Chelan County fire grows to more than 15,000 acres

The Wolverine Creek fire, burning northwest of Lucerne, 36 miles northwest of Chelan, has grown to more than 15,000 acres. The Wolverine Fire, burning on the west shore of Lake Chelan, grew significantly within a 24-hour period. Fire officials with the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center on Sunday said that level 3 evacuations were in place for 30 businesses and homes in Holden Village and Lucerne.

Pennsylvania family paying for fire department garage upgrades

When the borough’s nearly $1 million firetruck arrives early next year, the fire department will be ready for it. The DeNaples family is paying and handling arrangements for ongoing upgrades to the Fire Department garage, including replacing the floor and expanding the doors so the larger combination pumper/vehicle rescue/ladder truck can fit into the space, Councilman Salvatore Verrastro said.

Missouri firefighter dies in skydiving accident

A Northwest Missouri community mourned the unexpected loss of a hometown hero after a sky-diving accident over the weekend. Lt. Eric Lorenz, a veteran fire fighter with more than a decade’s worth of experience in Trenton, died in a sky-diving accident Saturday near Lexington, Mo., when a parachute malfunctioned.

New Jersey fire chief seeks demotion for pay raise

After three years, fire Chief Chris Breunig will step down from his position in order to receive a bigger salary, according to recent published reports. However, city officials maintain that Breunig continues to lead the fire department. On Friday, July 31, city business administrator Jim Mallon told The Gazette that while he can’t comment on particular personnel matters, the mayor has not approved the demotion of Breunig.
