While Illinois Firefighter/Paramedic Justin McWilliams knows he’s thrust into "toxic soup" when he does his job, he’s also anxious to learn how to protect himself.
That’s why he and 11 other firefighters rolled up their sleeves, gave blood and wore a number of monitors while they participated in a number of scenarios at the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI).

The Detroit fire commissioner has fired an EMT who refused to help a baby when she was just minutes away from the home.
Commissioner Edsel Jenkins said Ann Marie Thomas's employment with the Detroit Fire Department has been terminated.
"Today, we conducted an appeals hearing, which Ms. Thomas requested.

A diabetic Syracuse firefighter must be paid nearly two years' worth of lost wages and benefits after an appeals court ruled the city illegally fired him in 2013.
John Williams, of Camillus, will also be first in line for the next open position in the city fire department, said labor lawyer Nathaniel Lambright.

Two firefighters were stabbed while assisting a patient Wednesday afternoon during a medical-aid call in the East Village, authorities reported.
As emergency personnel were trying to treat a victim at a trolley stop, a male suspect walked up and pulled a knife or similar weapon and assaulted two firefighters shortly before 4 p.

A crane operator jumped for his life and nearby buildings were evacuated after a truck-mounted crane burst into flames Thursday morning in West Seattle.
Firefighters responded to the scene, in the 4000 block of SW Andover Street, at about 8:20 a.m. after receiving reports of a crane fire.
The plume of smoke from the fire could be clearly seen from Queen Anne and other Seattle vantage points as it flared up.
