There is no shortage of cringe-worthy things we've heard and said. The things we say reflect what we are thinking. It may be only what we are thinking at the moment and not represent our deeply held thoughts and beliefs. For an officer in the fire service, what you say is registered by the crew members and will alter how they view their leaders — even the flip remarks.

Connecticut town changes hiring rules to expedite firefighter interviews

The clock is ticking for the city to hire 16 new firefighters. After ditching a hiring test that turned out to be racist and sexist, the city now has too many applicants to handle. And $2.9 million is at stake. On Tuesday, the Fire Commission is scheduled to begin interviewing and selecting aspiring firefighters.

EMS Pioneer Who Trained Illinois Firefighters Remembered

Dr. Stanley M. Zydlo, the longtime head of emergency medical services at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, was the driving force behind creating the first multicommunity system of paramedics and emergency medical technicians in the country. "Stan was a man way ahead of his time. He saw the potential to save lives, and he made it a reality," said former Palatine Mayor Rita Mullins.

Houston Fire Dept. emails contradict mayor's swift water training claims

Emails that appear to be written by a member of the Houston Fire Department's leadership show firefighters were told they had to use their own money and time to attend training for swift water rescues, because the city did not have training money. The emails obtained by Channel 2 Investigates appear to contradict Mayor Annice Parker's claim that firefighters who perform swift water rescues get extensive training.
