Atlantic City gets $3.2 million grant to avoid 84 firefighter layoffs

Atlantic City firefighters set to be laid off Friday will keep their jobs for at least 2½ more months, thanks to a $3.2 million federal grant. The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant was paying the salaries and benefits of 50 firefighters, but the city planned to lay off them and 35 others to help close a huge budget deficit.

5 rescued after boats collide overnight on Lake Washington

A huge rescue response saved five people from the waters of Lake Washington overnight after two boats collided in the darkness. One of the boats sank quickly to the bottom of the lake. The drama unfolded at about 12:30 a.m. Friday when a 26-foot power boat with five people aboard collided with a 22-foot fishing boat with two people aboard, said Cmdr.

Man dies trying to put out brush fire near his Marysville home

An 86-year-old man died trying to fight a brush fire near his home in Marysville Thursday afternoon. Marysville firefighters received a report of a fire burning brush down a steep embankment near the 4100 block of Meridian Avenue. They then received a report that a person had fallen down the embankment, Marysville fire officials said.
