A pilot and passenger were injured Monday night when their small plane crashed into a tree on Whidbey Island.
The Cessna 182, which took off from Monroe, lost power at about 8:12 p.m and slammed into a tree behind a home on the island, according to Ed Wallace with the Island County sheriff's office.

From just across the Wenatchee River, Dominick Bonny watched a whole neighborhood in his town burn as a wildfire destroyed two dozen homes and forced hundreds to flee.
"With the wind blowing away from us, it was like we were watching a natural disaster within arm's reach," he said.

The Spokane Fire Department said Monday that two separate attic fires caused by electrical malfunctions damaged homes in Spokane Sunday evening.
The first fire was reported just before 6:30 p.m. on Illinois Ave and Smith St. and when fire crews arrived, they found that the blaze was caused by electrical problems in the attic.

A wildfire fueled by high temperatures and strong winds roared into a Wenatchee-area neighborhood and commercial district, forcing more than a thousand people to flee, destroying at least 24 homes and gutting two wholesale businesses, authorities said early Monday.

Two tourists from Ohio have been treated and discharged from Olympic Medical Center after their minivan plunged 25 feet off Hurricane Ridge Road near the summit and overturned 1½ times.
The wreck, which was at about 4:51 p.m. Friday, was about 3 miles below Hurricane Ridge near the Switchback trailhead, said Barb Maynes, Olympic National Park spokeswoman, on Saturday.

The Shell Station in Elma was evacuated for a short time Thursday afternoon after a car caught fire near the station’s gas pumps.
