Site work on the North Yarmouth (ME) Fire Company’s new fire museum on the village green has begun, reports pressherald.com, with about 1/5 of the necessary funds raised.

The museum will house the company’s first truck, a 1960, and other fire memorabilia, such as antique Matchbox cars, trophies from competitions, and a recently donated vintage Texaco toy fire truck, the report says.

Once complete, the museum will join North Yarmouth Historical Society’s Old Town House—moved to the green last month, the report says.

Most of the money has been raised through the organization’s bottle booth outside the station, at which people can drop off returnables. Officials say a fundraising drive will begin soon.

Yarmouth-based excavating contractor A.H. Grover cleared the lot, removed stumps, and began excavation work pro bono, and a local cabinet maker offered to donate cabinets for the building, according to the report.

The company already purchased electrical supplies to nip any potential price increases in the bud, and the foundation is set to be poured in the spring. However, the project’s timeline is dependent upon funds raised, the report says.

The city of Huntington (WV) is currently auctioning off, among other vehicles, a 1991 E-One pumper. As of this writing, there are no bids, no reserve, and the opening bid is set at $3,000.

The auction ends next Thursday, February 10, at 11:00 a.m. EST. The apparatus has 133,430 miles and needs some work, to put it mildly.

“This truck is a 1991 pumper fire truck,” the auction site reads. “It has a bad pitman arm & missing safety bolt, there are bare wires around the engine, there are fluid leaks, and bad batteries.

“Item will be sold as is. Purchaser is responsible for removing purchased items at their own expense. Item must be removed within five (5) days of auction closing date unless other arrangements are made with the City of Huntington.”

A 2006 Dodge Charger, a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, some Jeeps, and other vehicles are also up for bidding.

A retired Esquimalt (B.C., Canada) Fire Department 1988 Mack truck will see a second life in training, as it was donated to the First Nations’ Emergency Services Society of B.C., reports timescolonist.com.

The apparatus, which would normally be put up for auction, is currently housed at the society’s North Vancouver training center, according to the report. It was in service from 1988 until a few years ago.

Such Mack trucks from that era are incredibly durable, officials say, as they have few electronics, are simple to use, and rarely break down. Indeed, this apparatus is still in good shape. They add that the donated truck will travel around to remote, apparatus-less communities with instruction-giving staff.

The department has a history with the First Nations’ society, as it hosted a First Nations’ firefighter competition in 2017 and will be doing so again this year, the report says. It’s the society’s first fire truck since its formation in 1986.

The apparatus could have probably fetched around $2,000 at auction, but this way it will keep going for upwards of another 15 years, the report says.
