Bed Bugs Are Still At A Florence Fire Station

After weeks of extermination efforts, there are still bed bugs at Florence Fire Station No. 2. "There was apparently signs that there are still some on site," says Florence City Spokesperson Phil Stevenson, "The men were stopped from moving back in. We'll do another treatment and check back in a week.

The fire station was shut down in January after the bed bugs were first detected. The nine firefighters at Station 2 have moved to two other stations.

The city had to remove all the bedding in the fire station as a result of the infestation.

City on Track to Build Five Fire Stations

Lincoln is in the midst of a fire station boom. In early February the city began seeking bids related to five new fire stations that will be built in Lincoln over the next few years.

The city is looking for a contractor to build a replacement fire station near the Lincoln Airport and is seeking an architectural firm to design four new fire stations, to be built near the edges of the city.

One fire station, Station 11, is moving a half mile, from a building owned by the city's Airport Authority. The authority wants the building at Northwest 47th and West Adams streets for other uses.

The city is seeking construction bids for the station, which is expected to cost about $2.5 million and be finished by the fall, said Tom Casady, the city's public safety director.

The other four stations, expected to help serve Lincoln’s growing population, are part of a plan approved by voters in May 2015. Voters agreed to increase the city sales tax by a quarter-cent for three years to raise about $36 million for the fire stations and a new 911 emergency radio system.

Three Tips for Fire Station Design and Construction

Planning for the design and construction of a new station can be a daunting task. It makes writing specs for a new fire apparatus seem like childs play. Here this month is Ken Newell of Stewart Cooper Newell Architects with his three tips for designing and constructing a new firehouse.

First, Newell emphasizes establishing a preliminary, yet comprehensive, budget. Next on the list is to design the station so it is flexible and can serve multiple purposes. Plan for how the building will be used for years to come. And third, control costs by adding "add alternat bids" on bid day.

For explanations on all three tips, watch the video above.
