Yellowknife Airport in Canada Takes Delivery of Oshkosh Striker 6×6 ARFF Vehicle

Oshkosh Airport Products, LLC, an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) Company, announced today the Yellowknife Airport (YZF), located in Canada’s Northwest Territories, has taken delivery of an Oshkosh Airport Products Striker 6×6 ARFF vehicle. Sold through dealer Commercial Emergency Equipment Co. and delivered in late December 2021, the new ARFF truck will support the completion of a fleet renewal for emergency services at the Yellowknife Airport. Post-delivery inspection and extensive training have begun in preparation for the vehicle to join front line service in early 2022.

“We looked at a lot of ARFF vehicles and contacted many airport fire service representatives, and those with Strikers all spoke highly of Oshkosh’s reputation and quality,” said Randy Straker, regional airport manager with Yellowknife Airport. “In our location, winter arrives in October and doesn’t leave until mid-April, making a strong service partner essential to our operation. We’ve found Oshkosh Airport Products and Commercial fantastic in the way they take care of their customers, and we are confident we’ll have access to the critical parts and service support needed in the years ahead.”

Features of Yellowknife Airport’s Striker 6×6 ARFF vehicle:

  • Duetz 2015 V8 697 HP Tier 4 final engine
  • 50-foot (15.2 meters) Snozzle® High Reach Extendable Turret (HRET) with FLIR camera, color camera, and piercing nozzle
  • High-volume low attack HVLA turret
  • Water capacity: 3,170 gallons (12,000 liters)
  • Foam capacity: 420 gallons (1,590 liters)
  •  Dry chemical capacity: 550 Ibs (250 kg)
  •  Eco-EFP™ Foam Measurement System
  • Central Tire Inflation (CTI) System

“The temperature the day we delivered the new Striker 6×6 ARFF vehicle was -38.2 F (-39 C),” said Darren Daviduck, apparatus specialist – fire and emergency with Commercial Emergency Equipment Co. “Extreme cold weather conditions as low as -60 F (-51.2 C), rough and soft terrain, and the remote location made dependability and service support key factors for the Yellowknife Airport team. We appreciate their collaboration and the confidence they’ve placed in our apparatus specialists.”

Yellowknife is the capital city of Canada’s Northwest Territories and lies on the shore of Great Slave Lake. The Yellowknife Airport offers passenger and freight services with over 500,000 passengers yearly. Funding for the new Striker 6×6 ARFF vehicle was obtained through Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), which supports funding improvement projects for smaller regional airports, including improving regional airport safety.

Straker added, “Many smaller airports depend on the support of ACAP to assist with renewing their emergency services fleet. They have been an incredible resource, and we are grateful for the funding which has allowed us to purchase the crucial equipment we wouldn’t otherwise be able to obtain.”

North Palm Beach (FL) Fire Rescue Getting Temporary Station

North Palm Beach (FL) Fire Rescue staff will operate out of a temporary station once renovation work at the water-damaged North Fire Station in Palm Beach gets underway, reports palmbeachdailynews.com.

Town council recently approved the purchase of two trailers and a canopy that will serve as the temporary facility on the estimated $5.5 million project, the report says. The station will be ready for occupancy in June.

Last summer’s inspection revealed water damage and mold inside the 95-year-old station, the report says, which expedited the renovation process.

The three-story building, landmarked in 1988, houses 11 personnel who will move to the temporary station to be built by American Modular Systems, which has also built modular units for the City of West Palm Beach Fire Rescue, according to the report.

Worth $534,449, the contract includes the construction of a dormitory and bunker trailers as well as general temporary site modifications, officials say. The dorm trailer can house up to six firefighters, while the bunker will house fire gear.

The units will be placed at Wells Road, and staff will occupy the trailers for about 18 months during construction.

Jacksonville (NC) Fire and Emergency Services Holds Push-In Ceremony for Engine 3

Jacksonville (NC) Fire and Emergency Services Tuesday held a push-in ceremony for its newest fire engine at Station 3.

“New Fire Engine 3 is state of the art and has newer technology that allows for cleaner air to flow through the cab for firefighters and the latest in life-saving equipment.

“Jacksonville firefighters also added custom elements like handles to securely maneuver around the outside of the truck and strategic placement of gear and life-saving equipment for easier access. The new engine was custom-built by Pierce Manufacturing.

“Compared to the first City of Jacksonville fire engine from 1938, technology has improved greatly and the price has increased exponentially – with Old Unit 1 purchased at $20,000.

“The new Fire Engine 3 was custom-built and purchased for $650,000.

“‘It’s come a long way,’ Fire Chief Tee Tallman said.

“Once the new truck was sparkling clean, Jacksonville Fire & Emergency Services staff came together to push Engine 3 into its stall at Station 3.

“‘The changes you’ve seen in fire safety are truly amazing, but at the end of the day your job is still the same, protecting life and property,’ City Manager Richard Woodruff said.”
