Olean (NY) Fire Department’s Engine 40 Damaged

On Monday afternoon, the Olean (NY) Fire Department saw its Engine 40 damaged in an accident en route to a call.

“[Monday at] 1:59 p.m. Engine 40 and Ambulance 249 were dispatched to an Advanced Life Support medical call of an individual having chest pains and breathing difficulty at a West State Street location,” a Facebook post reads.

“During Engine 40’s response a vehicle pulled out in front of the fire engine at West State Street and North 20th Streets. Engine 40’s operator took evasive action to avoid hitting the vehicle on the driver’s side.

“Engine 40’s operator directed the vehicle towards Francis Square in which Engine 40 struck the concrete sign causing significant damage to the truck. Ambulance 249 continued on to take care of the patient at the West State Street location and FM-1 from Code Enforcement was dispatched to assist them on that call. The Officer of Engine 40 requested an ambulance and Supervisor to the scene.

“The operator and officer of Engine 40 were able to self-extricate from the fire truck. Both firefighters were evaluated and treated at the scene but did not seek transportation to the hospital. They are back on their respective shifts as of Tuesday morning

Honeywell Makes Strategic Investment in RapidSOS, Furthering Public Safety Communications Capabilities

  • Reinforces Honeywell’s efforts to modernize the public safety communications infrastructure
  • Enables integration of buildings’ fire systems with emergency response data platform to provide intelligent, incident-specific information for faster, more accurate emergency responses

ATLANTA and NEW YORKJanuary 26, 2022 – Honeywell (Nasdaq: HON) today announced a strategic investment in RapidSOS, as well as technology integrations between the two companies that will further modernize and digitize the public safety communications process. RapidSOS is the emergency response data platform used by more than 5,200 emergency communications centers (ECCs) worldwide.

The existing communications infrastructure between buildings, alarm monitoring stations, emergency centers and fire stations often uses legacy, manual technology, which slows response times and affects the accuracy of transmitted information.

Through the strategic investment and technology integrations, the Honeywell Connected Life Safety System (CLSS) will link to the RapidSOS emergency response data platform to provide faster, more accurate communications with emergency centers (i.e., 911 agencies). When combined with Honeywell’s solutions, RapidSOS technology will securely transmit detailed data about the emergency, such as the type of hazard, severity, and location within the impacted building to emergency response centers.

“Time matters in an emergency. If you add up the time that regulations allow for each step in the current emergency communications process, it takes 590 seconds – or nearly 10 minutes – from the time a fire is first detected to when first responders arrive at a building. We’re trying to improve communications processes to cut that time in half,” said Jurgen van Goethem, president of Commercial Fire and Security for Honeywell Building Technologies. “This investment in RapidSOS helps to further our efforts to improve both the quality of information shared and the time it takes for first responders to arrive at an emergency, potentially saving more lives. RapidSOS helps to deliver better information to emergency centers while our recent acquisition of US Digital Designs improves communication from the emergency center to the fire station.”

Honeywell recently acquired US Digital Designs, which delivers alerting and dispatch communications solutions to enhance first responders’ efficacy and enable faster emergency response times. Honeywell’s public safety communications portfolio also includes Fiplex bi-directional amplifiers (BDAs) that provide continuous and critical in-building radio coverage.

“Honeywell provides critical life safety systems that enable facility managers to harness the power of data to deliver enhanced fire safety service,” said Michael Martin, CEO, RapidSOS, “We are excited to work with Honeywell and equip first responders with intelligent, incident-specific connected building data before arriving on-scene to better protect our communities.”

RapidSOS works with public safety agencies to provide an emergency response data platform that integrates across first responder software and operational systems. RapidSOS connects more than 400 million devices to thousands of 911 agencies supporting more than 165 million emergencies annually.

The offerings complement Honeywell’s suite of solutions that help its customers meet their environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals, including improving the safety of building occupants and first responders.

Terms of the investment were not disclosed.

Elora (Ontario, Canada) Firefighter Airlifted to Hospital After Apparatus Crash

Video via kitchener.ctvnews.ca

An Elora (Ontario, Canada) firefighter suffered injuries but is in stable condition after a fire truck wound up on its side in a ditch on Tuesday morning, reports kitchener.ctvnews.ca.

The single-vehicle accident happened on Side Road 10 near Wellington Road 7 in Wellington County; crews were on scene responding to an alarm around 9:30 a.m., the report says.

Officials say one firefighter was trapped inside the truck and had to be airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital with non-life-threatening conditions—leg injuries and some cuts on his face.

Hard-packed snow is thought to be the cause, but the report notes that the OPP and Ministry of Labor will perform an investigation.

Plow Truck Used to Break into, Rob East Hampton (CT) Volunteer Fire Department Station

A search for a suspect(s) is underway after someone used a plow truck to break into the East Hampton (CT) Volunteer Fire Department’s Company #3 station.

“I Write to you today to ask for your help in identifying the person (or persons) that decided breaking into The East Hampton Volunteer Fire Department’s Company #3 station was a good idea,” a Facebook post reads.

“Overnight on 1/24/2022 someone used a plow truck to push in the overhead doors and gain access to our fire house. Luckily the only things we can determine that were taken was some tools and a toolbox, which if you knew us we would have gladly let some one borrow.

“What is of greater concern is the destruction of the overhead doors and building that rendered the door inoperable, this cost thousands of dollars to repair and and rendered the apparatus behind the broken door useless. Thankfully we did not have a call overnight requiring that apparatus to respond.

“If you live in the neighborhood, or if you were in the area and saw anything suspicious please contact the East Hampton Police Department, or call me direct 860-221-5505.

“We are back in full service and stand ready to serve as always, Thank you for your continued support.”
