Spokane Fire Department says cleaning clogged dryer vents can reduce fire risk

VIDEO: The Spokane Fire Department says more than 16,000 residential fires started by dryers happen every year across the U.S. Spokane fire officials say checking your dryer vent often can reduce the fire risk. “We try to make sure that ducting itself is clean,” said Michelle Welch, a local homeowner.

Western Washington wildfires continue to rage as air quality suffers

A recent spell of dry and hot weather in western Washington has allowed several wildfires to pop up, impacting thousands of acres of land and initiating closures of certain roadways. It’s already the middle of October, but fires continue to rage throughout western Washington, including a couple of fires in Skagit County that have increased in size over the hot weekend.

Gloucester (MA) Fire Department to Install Sprinklers, Alarms for Three Stations

The Gloucester Fire Department has been awarded a $291,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Ipswich Local News reported

The money will be used to fund the installation of proper sprinkler systems and working alarm systems for the department’s three substations, the report said.

The sprinkler systems will be installed at West Gloucester Fire Station, the Bay View Fire Station, and the Magnolia Fire Station, according to a fire official.

Groundbreaking for Manchester (NH) Fire’s New Station 9 held Monday

A groundbreaking ceremony for Manchester Fire Department’s new Station 9 on Calef Road was scheduled for Monday morning, UnionLeader.com reported.

Station 9 at 575 Calef Road has been closed since 5 p.m. Friday, October 7, in preparation for construction of a new fire house, the report said. The station was built in 1962.

Station 9, built into the hillside at the corner of Calef Road and Garfield Street, also responds to routes 293, 93 and 3 and to water rescues on the Merrimack River, the report said. It also is one of the primary responders to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, the report said.

Engine 9 also answers calls for multiple-alarm fires in the inner city and on the West Side, according to the report.

Duncanville (TX) Will Hold Groundbreaking for New Fire Station October 25

The city of Duncanville is proceeding with the construction of the new Fire Station 271, Duncanville.com reported. The community is invited to attend a special groundbreaking ceremony to be held at 10 a.m. October 25 at 308 West Camp Wisdom Road, Duncanville (TX).

Attendees will then hear remarks from Duncanville Mayor Barry L. Gordon, City Manager Aretha R. Ferrell-Benavides, Assistant Fire Chief Greg Chase, Interim Director of Public Works Jacqueline Culton, BRW Architects, and representatives of CORE Construction. The ceremony will begin with an invocation delivered by Mayor Pro Tem Joe Veracruz.

The new fire station will be a significant upgrade for firefighters and staff. Once completed, the modern Fire Station 271 will replace the current facility on Camp Wisdom Road that was built in 1966. The new ADA-compliant station will be 15,564 square feet, with 10 dorms and 8 restrooms that will better support both male and female staff. It will also better accommodate the city’s ladder trucks, which are approximately 11 feet tall and 40 feet long.

This project was approved by residents in the 2018 Bond Election. Construction will take place over the next several months with substantial completion anticipated by fall 2023. Renderings of the facility can be made available upon request.
