Millions of Dollars Approved for Upgrades to Indianapolis Fire Stations

Earlier this month, the Indianapolis City-County Council approved a $7 million bond to completely rebuild Station 20 on Emerson and 16th street, WishTV.com reported.

An additional $1 million was set aside for improvements to several different fire stations. There are unseen hazards in older fire stations, like firefighting equipment that emits cancerous fumes, the report said. IFD wants to build a separate storage area to store the equipment.

Space inside the average firehouse has shrunk over the years as the station was retrofitted to accommodate a changing workforce. IFD has made the most of its fire stations, but much like an old home, even firehouses need repairs.

An additional $7.5 million was appropriated to build a new firehouse replacing the existing one in Broad Ripple, which is nearly 100-years-old, the report said.

Rebuilt $14.4M Fire Station Opens in Carlsbad (CA)

Firefighters are settling into their new station in Carlsbad, Fox5SanDiego.com reported.

Located along El Camino Real next to the La Costa Resort, the rebuilt 10,000-square-foot Fire Station 2 is nearly three times the size of the old station, which was built in 1969 and was home to one firefighter and one engine responding to 250 calls a year, the report said.

Fire Station 2 crews were in need of an upgrade, as they now respond to 4,000 calls a year, according to the report.

The $14.4 million project was approved by voters in 2016.

The modern firehouse also includes environmentally-friendly features such as solar panels, solar water heating and electric vehicle charging stations, the report said.

During construction, crews and equipment were relocated to the nearby city library.
