Arlington County (VA) Fire Department Debuts New Engine with Retro Logo

The Arlington County Fire Department is reviving a door logo last seen on county vehicles more than 50 years ago, ARLnow.com reported.

The department is gradually upgrading its vehicles with new features, including a better ride quality on its engines, the report said. A fire official said the department’s apparatus committee opted for a 1968-70 throwback design over the existing “old English style door logo.”

Beyond the visual changes, department members will have more space thanks to new cabs and chassis (the part of the vehicle including the frame, engine, transmission and other important pieces) from fire apparatus maker Pierce Manufacturing, the report said.

Airdrie (Canada) Fire Department Colors Engine Pink for Cancer Awareness

Although most of Airdrie’s residents are accustomed to the yellow fire engines that the city’s fire department has, for the month of October, the fire department’s front-line engine will be colored pink. This color change is not just meant to turn heads, but to also raise awareness around the impact of cancer, DiscoverAirdie.com reported.

Members of the public will see the engine responding to calls in the community throughout the month, and as always, when the crews are finished addressing emergency events they will be happy to connect with the public and share stories of their personal experiences, the report said.

According to the Airdrie Professional Firefighters Association, in addition to the risk faced by the public with a cancer diagnosis, firefighters carry more than two times the risk of a testicular, mesothelioma, or brain cancer diagnosis than the general public and four times the risk of cervical cancer, the report said.

To start the month off, the pink-wrapped engine will be at the Airdrie Homecoming event on Saturday, October 1.

Las Cruces (NM) is asking city voters to vote on a $10 million general obligation (GO) bond to pay for a ninth station that would be built on the East Mesa, one of Las Cruces’ fastest growing areas, LasCrucesBulletin.com reported.

The $10 million requested will cover most of the cost of designing a 12,000-square-foot station, as well as building and equipping it, a fire official said, according to the report.

The Las Cruces FireDepartment began as a volunteer organization in 1907 and has grown into one of the top-rated fire departments in the United States, the report said.
