'A national tragedy': 10 years ago, Big Tex went up in flames at Texas State Fair

Ten years ago Wednesday, Big Tex burned. And there was no saving him. A reported electrical fire sent the State Fair of Texas icon up in flames, nearly incinerating him into a heap of ashes. Only a fried skeleton of the famed cowboy and his waving hands were left in the end. Researchers in Oregon create video game to prepare players for the next big earthquake

VIDEO: It's the gameplay with a play on words in the title: Cascadia 9.0 Researchers at Lewis & Clark College are taking interactive measures to make sure people know what to do in case of an earthquake emergency. Nakia Creek fire is now ‘No. 1 priority fire in nation’ as firefighters ramp up efforts, wait for rain

Officials on Wednesday said the Nakia Creek fire is the “number-one priority fire in the nation” because of its potential risk to life and the resources needed to put it out. Though evacuation orders have been dialed back for some of the 40,000 people who had to leave their homes this week, “we’re not out of the woods yet,” said Dave Larson, deputy incident commander for the Oregon Department of Forestry, the agency that has taken charge of the firefighting efforts at Larch Mountain in Clark County.

Duck and cover: The Great Washington ShakeOut took place today

The Great Washington ShakeOut took place Thursday at 10:20 am across the state. It was a chance for people to take cover and prepare for when an earthquake or tsunami hits. The Washington Emergency Management Division said 120 Washington tsunami sirens along the inner and outer coast were tested using the real wailing sound of a tsunami warning.
