Swampscott (MA) Debuts New Blue Fire Apparatus

 
 
The $645,000 piece of equipment, which needed no extra funds for the color change, is stainless steel, includes a nearly silent engine that keeps the truck quiet, has a tight-turning radius for Swampscott’s narrow roads and comes equipped with an approach and departure angle that allows it to go up steep hills.  

The fire department’s seven-person truck selection committee deliberated for more than 10 months on every detail that went into the engine. Archer, a member of the committee, said the idea to stray from tradition and go blue came from the younger firefighters who grew up playing on Big Blue sports teams, and whose children play on them now.

The process for getting a new engine began in 2017, after the department received approval from the Capital Improvement Committee, Finance Committee and annual Town Meeting to use funds from the budget to pay for it. Then, Archer said they put it out to bid for a year before deciding to go with Seagrave, a manufacturer based in Wisconsin.

Henderson (KY) Discusses Fire Apparatus Replacement

 
 

A 2009 city fire engine and crew were responding to an emergency call with lights and sirens when the fire truck was struck on the front right side by a passenger vehicle at the intersection of Sand Lane and Green Street, according to Henderson Fire Department Chief Scott Foreman.

No firefighters were hurt in the collision, although the Buick passenger vehicle's driver was taken to the hospital. Meanwhile, the fire truck -- which the fire department had hoped to get another 10 years of service from -- has been totaled.

FDNY Awards Five Year Ambulance Contract for Wheeled Coach Ambulances

The ambulance division of REV Group, a specialty vehicle manufacturer, was awarded a five-year contract to build up to 425 Type I Wheeled Coach ambulances for the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). The contract calls for a variety of vehicle configurations that is valued at approximately $160 million depending on the vehicle mix requirements. It is anticipated that ambulances related to this contract will begin to ship mid fiscal 2020.

This new fleet of ambulances is built on Ford’s F-550 4x4 chassis and includes an auxiliary power unit to meet the FDNY Green initiative that enables the ambulances to fully operate without the need to run the vehicle’s engine in idle mode. Additional enhancements include high-visibility reflective safety-graphics, and a Vista brake lock to prevent vehicle theft.

In 2018, FDNY recorded approximately 1.9 million ambulance runs, which is a new high for the department. REV Ambulance Group Orlando, Inc. and its Wheeled Coach brand of ambulances was the successful bidder meeting the operational and design requirements of the FDNY for this contract.

“FDNY responds to a staggering 5,100 EMS calls a day, and the ambulances we build for them run non-stop. The learning we obtain from designing and building FDNY’s vehicles for the past ten years is evident in every ambulance we make,” stated Tim Sullivan, CEO of REV Group. “We build a better ambulance because of it.”

FDNY has operated Wheeled Coach Ambulances for the past ten years which includes over 660 in service today. Orders are dependent upon budgetary approval and allocation, and production for this latest contract will be staged in phases based on FDNY budget funding and replacement schedules, enabling FDNY to rotate their fleet over the course of this contract term.

Finley Fire Equipment to Open New Western Ohio Service Center

APPLETON, WI—Pierce Manufacturing Inc., announced that Finley Fire Equipment, the exclusive Pierce dealer for Ohio, Kentucky, and part of West Virginia, has secured a location for development of the company’s largest service center in Ohio. The Western Ohio Service Center is located off of I-75 at 11600 County Road 99 in Findlay, Ohio, with a planned opening in August 2019. In addition to preventive maintenance and major repair work for apparatus, including aerial platforms, the new service center will act as headquarters for a fleet of mobile service units. 

Finley Fire Equipment’s Western Ohio Service Facility will provide:

  • Expanded indoor areas to accommodate ladder maintenance, repair, and aerial platform work and education
  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) trainings
  • Ample storage space for apparatus parts and equipment inventory to be kept on site for quick repairs
  • Hydrostatic air bottle testing to DOT standards
  • Pump testing
  • A specialized service to clean and decontaminate firefighter gear exposed to carcinogens and other harmful substances
  • Additional mobile service vehicles and on-the-road technicians

Located within easy interstate access from Toledo, Lima, Dayton, and Mansfield, the Western Ohio Service Center facility allows fire departments in the surrounding communities the ability to have apparatus inspected or repaired and put back into service quickly.

Anheuser-Busch Delivers Emergency Drinking Water to Volunteer Firefighters Nationwide

May 29, 2019 – This week, Anheuser-Busch will deliver approximately 300,000 cans of emergency drinking water to 26 of the country’s volunteer fire departments, in partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), to provide critical hydration to first responders in advance of wildfire season.

Anheuser-Busch announced the expansion of its 30-year-old emergency drinking water program in April, and has committed to donating one million cans of clean drinking water in support of volunteer fire departments in 2019.

“Eighty-three percent of the nation’s fire departments, which protect our communities from hazards of all kinds, are all- or mostly-volunteer,” said Steve Hirsch, Chair of the NVFC. “Funding for needed resources is a constant challenge for many of these departments, making this donation even more important as it directly supports the health and safety of our firefighters and the communities they serve.”

To officially kick off the expanded program, the brewer has worked closely with the NVFC to identify and select some of the most vulnerable markets across the country to receive this initial water delivery to help prepare for the upcoming wildfire season.

“As the country faces more natural disasters, like wildfires, preparation plays a major role in ensuring fire departments across the country have the resources they need to protect their friends and neighbors,” said Adam Warrington, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at Anheuser-Busch. “In the same way we have utilized our production strengths to can water throughout the year to support our communities at a moment's notice, these water donations – in advance of wildfire season – will provide critical hydration to help our nation’s volunteer firefighters stand ready for our communities in times of need.”

The program will also implement a rapid-response approach to support volunteer departments nationwide actively fighting wildfires throughout the year. Starting in June, volunteer fire departments across the U.S. will be able to request Anheuser-Busch emergency drinking water through the NVFC for their immediate or upcoming wildfire response needs. Through their local wholesaler partners, and in connection with the NVFC, Anheuser-Busch will be delivering emergency drinking water to the following volunteer fire departments this week:
