Wisconsin fire department citizenship requirement dropped by Fire and Police Commission

The Milwaukee Fire Department has opened the door for more people to become firefighters. Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski said the change is a long time coming. The Milwaukee Fire Department can now hire anyone who is legally hirable, whether they’re a United States citizen or not. Chief Lipski said the department can benefit from more diversity, people who are multilingual and anyone who wants to serve their community.

'Earliest detection is best;' New firefighter app aims to better track cancer risks

It’s the deadlier than fire, on-the-job danger every firefighter faces - cancer. The CDC has found cancer is now the leading cause of death among firefighters, and the World Health Organization has now defined firefighting as a cancer-causing profession. In May 2021, News 13 debuted its investigative documentary Deadlier than Fire, focusing on the need for presumptive worker’s compensation benefits for North Carolina firefighters diagnosed with cancer.

Investigation into fire on roof of 4-story Seattle apartment complex underway

Crews are investigating a rooftop fire that broke out in north Seattle on Thursday evening. According to the Seattle Fire Department, the fire began around 9:45 p.m. on the roof of a four-story apartment complex in the 500 block of North 85th Street in the Greenwood neighborhood. Crews managed to keep the fire from spreading beyond the roof.

Lost ram finds home at Graham fire station

Graham firefighters rescued a lost ram wandering the streets last week. Although they're reluctant to give him a name. ”We’ve just been calling it the ‘Graham Ram,’” said Graham Fire & Rescue Captain Andrew Kolabis. “I think out of maybe out of fear of attachment we haven’t given him a name yet.” Last Monday a member of the fire department said a neighbor had trapped a ram in his backyard.

‘My biggest idol:’ Tri-Cities mother and daughter firefighters reunite at Cow Canyon wildfire
