Kittens in peril all over South Sound but firefighters come to rescue

A structure fire partially damaged a Thurston County home Saturday afternoon and gave two kittens smoke inhalation. In an unrelated incident a kitten became trapped in the wall of a Lacey apartment building. The West Thurston Regional Fire Authority was called to the fire in the 6500 block of 105th Ave.

Port Townsend Paper mill fire quickly extinguished

A fire quickly extinguished by the Port Townsend Paper Corp. fire brigade did minimal damage to the mill with no injuries, East Jefferson Fire Rescue said. Mill officials reported a major fire to 9-1-1 dispatchers at 3:27 p.m. Thursday after a fire broke out on the ground floor of the Recovery Room, said Bill Beezley, East Jefferson Fire Rescue spokesman.

Extra wildland firefighters ready to respond on Eastside

With the high temperatures and low humidity Eastside Fire and Rescue decided to increase staffing of wildland firefighters. An extra crew is staffing the brush truck out of Station 87 in North Bend. The crew will respond anywhere they are needed in Zone 1 which covers most of the Eastside and around the north end of Lake Washington and south to Shoreline.

Crews fight flames at Kent home

Firefighters worked to put out a flames at a Kent home early Friday. The fire at the home at 40th Avenue South and South 271st Place started at about 3:40 a.m. Investigators say it appears that the fire started at the back of the home. Crews used larger hoses than normal to keep the fire from spreading in the dry conditions.

Man shot by police at burning Spokane Valley Motel 6 charged with arson

A knife-wielding man who was shot by police after he refused to leave a burning Motel 6 in Spokane Valley in June made his first appearance in court Thursday. Michael J. Kruse, 41, is charged with first-degree arson in connection with the fire. Investigators believe he set fire to the bed in his room, according to court documents.
