Chuckanut Mountain wildfire grows overnight

A small 2 to 3 acre fire on Chuckanut Mountain grew rapidly overnight to 60 acres and is now threatening 4 homes. Janet Pearce with State Department of Natural Resources said the extremely hot, dry weather has made the situation worse. Local fire districts are joining with DNR resources to work on the fire.

Cosmopolis teen continues lemonade stand to benefit fire department for 11th year

Susie Marie started a lemonade stand when she was 4 years old to buy candy for herself. However, a little friendly prompting from her family easily persuaded her to donate the money to the Cosmopolis Fire Department. She proudly handed over her earnings: $13. Last year, that little lemonade stand brought in just under $3,500 — which was, as in each previous year, donated to the fire department.

Firefighters contain Omak wildfire

Firefighters made short work of a fast-moving grass fire near Omak Tuesday evening. The fire, which was burning on a hillside south of the old Omak Wood Products mill, was contained by 6 p.m., said Okanogan County Emergency Manager Maurice Goodall. “We had good response. They had three drops from aircraft, which was probably a big help,” he said.

Woodland Fire District 1 levy passes

The Woodland-area fire district levy passed, and voters in the district sent incumbent Jim Kellar and Dean Boon on to square off in the November general election. The levy, which District 1 officials said is needed to replace aging equipment, got 64 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s primary election.

Fire concerns rise with the temperatures

Near Mabton, south of Yakima, the Glade 3 fire began Sunday night and quickly spread to 10,000 acres. The State Department of Natural Resources on Monday increased the fire danger rating to high in parts of Northwest Washington and restricted campfires on land protected by the agency. According to a DNR news release, "as of midnight tonight, campfires in San Juan, Island, Whatcom, Skagit, and Snohomish counties will only be allowed in campgrounds with approved fire pits and onsite camp hosts.
