A 21-year-old man is dead after being pinned under a rock off Highway 2 near Index, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office. Investigators say the man was scrambling across a rockfield near Heybrook Lookout when a rock fell on him. He was with three other friends hiking the back side of Heybrook Lookout, just off the logging road, according to Snohomish County Fire District 7.

A King County Superior Court jury on Thursday awarded $9.5 million to the family of a Kingston man who died in a collision with a fire truck. On the morning of July 4, 2014, Jason Foster was was riding a motor scooter on Miller Bay Road, approaching its intersection with West Kingston Road. The traffic signal turned yellow, and he continued.

A lawyer representing Skagit County Fire District 1 suggested to district commissioners Thursday several edits to a proposed services contract with the city of Mount Vernon. Among Richard Davis’ suggestions was to negotiate a lower annual rate with Mount Vernon. Fire District 1 has no fire station or firefighters of its own, and instead relies on having Mount Vernon provide services.

A brand new fleet crew with Washington State Ferries are learning how to fight fires this week. For two days, 70 employees have been participating in fire training as part of two week training program preparing crew for emergencies on the water. "We do firefighting, we do in-water rescue and we do first aid," said Washington State Ferries Director Amy Scarton.

Vancouver Fire Department Chief Joe Molina has been selected to serve on a Federal Emergency Management Agency subcommittee focused on emergency response training and hazardous materials incidents involving railroads. Molina, serving with 22 others including two fire chiefs, was selected to the FEMA National Advisory Council RESPONSE Subcommittee.
