Conduit Architecture + Design has been involved with the design and construction of several fire stations for the city of McKinney (TX), with its most recent effort coming with the completion of Fire Station No. 11 at 6260 Rundell Way in McKinney, an area that’s seen rapid growth and is densely populated with mixed single- and multi-family housing, duplexes, apartment complexes, and some commercial structures.

Danny Kistner, McKinney Fire Department’s chief, says the city has a population of 200,000 in 69 square miles, but when the department’s extra-territorial jurisdiction is taken into account, that coverage area balloons to 113 square miles. “Our 11 stations are single-apparatus houses, with seven of them having a medical unit,” Kistner says. “We run on the quint concept and have half of our stations populated with engines, and the rest with 100-foot aerial quints. We expect to take delivery of an aerial platform soon, and in the coming years intend on having a tractor drawn aerial (TDA) in Station 11.”
Eric Ciskowski, principal at Conduit, points out that Conduit designed and built Stations 9 and 10 for McKinney, and got the contract to handle Station 11 in mid-2019. “Station 11 is a single-story fire station with three bays that are double-deep, drive through, with MagneGrip vehicle emission systems and positive pressure between the living areas and the bays,” Ciskowski says. “While Stations 9 and 10 were in residential neighborhoods and required designs to complement those areas, Station 11 is in a more urban area, with apartment buildings, and the course where the Byron Nelson golf tournament is held nearby, so they wanted a taller station with a more urban feel.”

For years, the fire prevention messaging was simple and snappy: When you change your clocks for daylight saving time, change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
If Congress does away with the biannual clock change, as the Senate this week proposed, that reminder won’t be there anymore.
