Ball Rolling on $8.6M Davenport (IA) Fire Station 3

Davenport fire station 3’s relocation is a smidge closer to fruition, as city council approved an estimated $8.6 million construction project.

The city’s recently approved six-year capital improvement budget has $10 million set aside for the project, and city council also approved $659,000 for OPN Architects to design it.

The new facility will be constructed at 300 East 42nd St.

Davenport is expected to start accepting construction bids this week, officials say, with the contract most likely being awarded in a month or so. Without any setbacks, a groundbreaking could be held in July. After that, construction should take about 12 to 14 months for completion.

The current station was built more than a half-century ago and lies in the Duck Creek flood plain.

Atlanta (GA) Mayor Pushes to Build Eight New Fire Stations

Atlanta has work underway on four new stations, and Mayor Andre Dickens is asking for four more.

After touring some of the city’s deteriorating fire stations and listening to stories about broken equipment and staffing issues, Dickens told Fox 5 an increase in the department budget is in the works for his June budget proposal.

Dickens also is asking voters to approve bond measures on the May 24 ballot. One of the measures has $58 million included for fire house improvements.

VIDEOS: Over 150 firefighters battle pallet yard fire in Arizona

A crew of over 150 responded to a wind-driven fire at a pallet yard late Tuesday night in Phoenix. According to Phoenix Fire, crews arrived at the scene near 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road just after 10 p.m. on May 17 and immediately called for backup. When additional firefighters arrived, a surround and drown operation was established, "with elevated master streams and flowing big water to suppress the flames and keep them from extending to nearby businesses.

2 Firefighter Unions In Maryland Say Firefighter Safety Act Could Prevent Them From Doing Their Jobs

Two local firefighter’s unions made clear Tuesday that they do not support the Firefighter Safety Act because it “seems poised to unreasonably restrict” them from performing their duties. The Baltimore Fire Fighters Association and the Baltimore Fire Officers Association in a six-page letter to the Baltimore City Council described their grievances with the bill, which regulates the way firefighters respond when a vacant building is on fire.
