Federal broadband network helps North Carolina first responders communicate better in a crisis

Life without internet or cell service is an inconvenience for most of us, but in times of crisis, it’s a matter of life or death for first responders. Several local law enforcement and rescue agencies gathered Tuesday in Southport to demonstrate and learn about a new network AT&T built with the federal government to ensure first responders don’t lose communication if an area sees outages or service interruptions.

Texas: Should City of Austin employees be allowed to use low-THC medical marijuana?

Austin leaders are considering whether city employees should be allowed to use low-THC medical marijuana. According to a memo dated March 25, the conversation started after House Bill 1535 became a Texas law on Sept. 1, 2021. HB 1535 adds all forms of cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder to the list of qualifying conditions and doubles the amount of THC allowed in marijuana products from half a percent to 1%.

111th anniversary of Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in New York commemorated

Neither a COVID resurgence or construction sheds at the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire—Greene St. and Washington Place— stopped committed activists from marking the anniversary of one of the deadliest industrial accidents in U. S. history. One hundred forty-six garment workers, mostly young Jewish and Italian immigrants, died when locked stairwells and exits prevented their escape from a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory.

Seattle firefighters have gone to 260 homeless camp fires in 2022 already

Homeless camp fires continue to pop up nearly every day but the calls for help appear to actually be slowing down. The City of Seattle started recording homeless encampment fires in Aug. 2021, recording 126 total fires for the month. There were 539 recorded homeless camp fires between August and Dec.

Fire crews respond to a fire at Summit Storage in Kennewick

Fire crews from Benton County Fire District No. 1, Kennewick Fire, Pasco Fire and Richland Fire Department all responded to a call of a fire at Summit Storage. Captain Aaron Biben with Benton County Fire District No. 1 says, when the first crew arrived at the scene, they saw heavy smoke coming from the South end of the facility.
