The apparatus from Station 812/College Park was operating on the 4600 block of 49th Avenue in College Park at a medic call when its engine caught fire.

The fire was extinguished sans further incident, and another unit arrived to transport an adult female in critical condition.

Construction of three fire stations across the island is to be completed during the new financial year.

These are the Montego Bay Fire Station in St. James, the Port Maria Fire Station in St. Mary, and the Yallahs Fire Station in St. Thomas.

A sum of $673.54 million has been allocated under the Jamaica Disaster Vulnerability Reduction Project to complete these works and other activities.

The money, which has been set aside in the 2022/23 Estimates of Expenditure, will also be used to complete the Port Royal Street Coastal Revetment Project in Kingston and facilitate training on the new Building Codes by institutions such as the HEART/NSTA Trust, Management Institute for National Development (MIND) and the University of Technology (UTech).

In addition, the allotment will go towards completing a three-year Seismology Research Fellowship, as well as completing the National Risk Information Platform (NRIP), and Microzonation Study and Coastal Assessments.

Up to December 2021 under the project, infrastructure works and equipping of the seismic support unit at the University of the West Indies (UWI) were completed, civil works on two box culverts in Church Pen were completed, two water trucks were procured and delivered to the Jamaica Fire Brigade and the Ecosystems Assessment Report and drafts of the revised Jamaica Fire Code and Jamaica Building Code were completed.

The project, which seeks to enhance Jamaica’s resilience to disaster and climate risk, is being implemented by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), with funding from the Government of Jamaica and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD)

It commenced in April 2016 and is slated to end in June 2022 following an extension.

A state appeals court has reversed convictions against a Moses Lake man accused of setting his father’s car on fire in 2020. Andres Rocha was convicted by a jury of first-degree and second-degree arson. He was sentenced to more than five years in prison. Moses Lake police initially contacted Rocha in the afternoon of March 22, 2020 after Rocha had filled fountain drink cups with gasoline at a gas station on West Broadway Avenue.

A sheriff’s deputy was hurt Monday morning after a suspect, attempting to evade arrest, crashed into an Alpine fire apparatus, reports fox5sandiego.com.

Officials say, around 7 a.m. first responders received a call about a man with a medical emergency at the Chevron gas station at 1145 Tavern Rd. in Alpine. When first responders arrived at the scene, they saw sheriff’s officials confronting the 32-year-old driver—who had drug paraphernalia in plain sight, the report says.

Sheriff’s officials then asked the suspect to exit the vehicle, but he accelerated in reverse—with the door open—and hit the fire truck. En route to the collision, the ajar door hit a deputy, who was taken to the hospital for a minor nose abrasion and some shoulder pain, the report says.

The 32-year-old suspect, hailing from National City, was detained without further incident; he’s expected to face charges of DUI, assaulting an officer, and more, the report says.

No other injuries were reported.
