A new Senate bill could give the Jackson (MS) Fire Department a portion of the funds it needs to build a new station on North State Street, reports wlbt.com.
S.B. 2060 aims to appropriate $2 million to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, which would allow for contraction with the department to provide fire protection, according to the report.
The funds would be awarded to the medical center by the state and would be awarded to the fire department as a one-time payment, the report notes.

Its language does not say how the funds are to be spent, but department officials are hoping to build a new station to replace the 1957-built 1800 block facility. Officials estimate that the potential $2 million would be half of what’s needed to rebuild the station.
The measure must pass the full Senate by February 23, according to the report.
