Spokane firefighters have personal push to climb 69 flights at Blood Cancer United Firefighter Stairclimb

VIDEO: Imagine putting on 60 or 70 pounds of gear and walking up 69 flights of steps. That’s exactly what hundreds of firefighters do every spring at the Blood Cancer United Firefighter Stairclimb in Seattle, a fundraiser to fight blood cancers. Right now, Spokane firefighters are in training to shut down a different kind of tragedy. This year, a local team is doing the stair climb event this March.

“Thousands of firefighters come together from across the country to climb 69 flights of stairs in full turnout gear and on air to raise money for blood cancer,” said firefighter Chris Nunley. Seventeen Spokane firefighters are competing in the Blood Cancer United Firefighter Stairclimb. They’ll tackle more than 1,300 stairs at Seattle’s Columbia Center. A fierce feat, but a small step in the fight against blood cancers.
