The Clifton Fire Department is launching a drive to distribute turnout gear, medical supplies and other equipment, much of it surplus but still usable, to firefighters in Ukraine.

The idea started with firefighter Oleg Skachko who emigrated from Ukraine when he was 14 and is now in his third year with the department. And it’s quickly caught on with other departments joining the effort, NorthJersey.com reports.

Firefighters watching as Ukrainian firefighters continue working even as their country is under siege by Russian troops were eager to join the effort to help.

PHOTOS: Rural firefighters had to get creative while fighting a house fire in a remote area Saturday night. VIDEOS: Memphis Fire Department arrived on the scene of an active fire at Baymont Inn hotel on the 6000 block of Shelby Oaks Drive Monday, March 7 at 12:57. According to an official statement released from MFD, the fire started when several mattresses were placed against the hotel building and intentionally set on fire.
