A discarded cigarette near Pullman threatened the Washington State University campus and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Pullman firefighters and Whitman County District 12 were called out to the intersection of Terre View Drive and Highway 270 around Noon on Saturday. Fire investigator Darren Jones, of WSU Fire Safety, said a freshly tossed cigarette that was found near the signal lights caused the fire.

High level haze in the skies over Western Washington on Sunday was most likely a result of wildfires burning to the south - but on Monday forecasters expect the smoke to be potentially be more intense in Western Washington and the Puget Sound region. On Sunday those dreaded hazy skies were bringing disappointment and worry to companies like Sailing Seattle who do business outdoors.

A small brushfire garnered a large response Friday morning around 9:00 am on South Lakeshore road about 16 miles west of Chelan. Chelan Fire Assistant Chief Brandon Asher said the quarter acre fire was threatening a home and about to move up the steep slope of a nearby hill when crews arrived, so they called a 2nd alarm to bring in additional resources.

VIDEO: Three Honolulu aircraft rescue firefighters are talking for the first time about their role in helping save two pilots earlier this month after engine failure caused their Boeing 737 cargo plane to crash in the ocean off Kalaeloa. On July 2, the pilot of Transair Flight 810 to Kahului alerted air traffic control it was headed back to Honolulu’s airport because of an in-flight emergency.
