North Seattle Airbnb gutted after large fire in U-District

A fire has gutted a vacant north Seattle home. Neighbors say the home was used for an Airbnb in the 4300 block of 5th Avenue Northeast in the University District. This is right next to the freeway, so drivers may have seen smoke and lights coming from the area. Crews said heavy flames were coming out of the front porch and inside the home when they got there.

Ocean City (MD) Council Approves Fire Station Design

The city council approved designs for a fire station after the cost was reduced, reports The Dispatch.

Last spring, officials voted to replace the aging and dilapidated Station 3 firehouse. The firehouse was built in 1969 and expanded in 1987. In the decades since, it has fallen into disrepair and no longer meets the needs of the department.

The overall cost estimate was around $5.5 million. The estimated value of the old fire station land is around $1.5 million.

With the revised design, the new estimate for the Station 3 firehouse at 65th Street dropped to just over $9 million, which, after the sale of the old station, could be reduced further to around $7.6 million.

San Francisco (CA) Floating Fire Station Nears Completion

A two-story, 14,800 sq ft fire station being built on water will soon be operational in San Francisco, reports ASCE.

The city posted to the Public Works’ website, “The new Fireboat Station No. 35 at Pier 22 1/2will be a two-story, 15,000+ sq. ft. fireboat station behind the existing fireboat house. The fireboat house is a San Francisco Landmark, and will continue to function as Engine Company No. 35.  The new structure will be built on top of a steel float and anchored by four guide piles. This will allow the new fireboat station to rise and fall with the natural tide of the Bay, King Tides and projected Sea Level Rise. San Francisco Fire Department’s three fireboats and rescue watercraft will be moored at the new floating facility.  The existing dilapidated Piers 22 1/2 and 24 will be demolished.

Funding for this project is provided by the Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response (ESER) bond, which passed with 79 percent approval of San Francisco voters in June 2014.”
