Machine learning could save firefighters from deadly flashovers

New machine learning algorithms could soon help firefighters forecast dangerous flashover ignition events using sensor data from burning buildings. Called P-Flash, the system was developed by Thomas Cleary and colleagues at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the US and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Child in France builds special bond with Florida firefighters

Spokane Fire Department’s special medical unit kept busy as heat rages

Less than 2 minutes after the Spokane Fire Department’s Alternative Response Unit pulled into Station 1 on Tuesday afternoon, the next call came in. “This is the busiest rig in the city,” Lt. Gabe Mills said from the passenger’s seat. The Alternative Response Units are dispatched to low-priority medical calls, and they have been busy during Spokane’s historic heat wave this week.

City of Walla Walla postpones July 4 fireworks display due to risk of fire

The City of Walla Walla is officially announcing the July 4 fireworks display will be postponed until an as-yet-unknown later date. Tuesday, the Walla Walla City Council did not express objection to the proposal of city officials to postpone the city’s July 4 fireworks display because of the current extreme heat and dry conditions.
