'Way beyond a physical pain': Young couple recalls Cold Springs Fire tragedy one year later

The lives of Jacob and Jamie Hyland were fundamentally changed over Labor Day weekend 2020 when tragedy struck the couple and their child during a getaway to Okanogan County. The Hylands and their one-year-old son, Uriel, were trying to escape the Cold Springs Fire when they were overcome by flames.

Update: Man who set fire to Seattle East Precinct during CHOP sentenced to 2 years in prison

A 36-year-old Tacoma resident was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday for setting fire to the outside of the Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) East Precinct in June 2020. Isaiah Thomas Willoughby, who once resided in Seattle, agreed to a plea deal in which he admitted to lighting a small pile of debris on fire outside the East Precinct in the early morning hours of June 12, 2020, which was during the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP).

Vancouver firefighters extinguish fire in below grade grain storage at Great Western Malting

Vancouver Fire Department crews were able to extinguish a fire Monday afternoon at Great Western Malting. Four Vancouver fire units were dispatched at 2:47 p.m. Monday (Oct. 4) for a fire in a below grade grain silo. On scene maintenance workers called 9-1-1 after they were unable to control the fire with staff and fire protection equipment on scene.

Macomb County (MI) Fire Stations Hold Open House Events

Several Macomb County fire departments will host annual observations this weekend, reports Macomb Daily.

Upcoming open houses include:

• Armada Township, 23175 Armada Center Road, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10. Fire trucks on display, safety demonstrations, bounce house, snacks and refreshments.

• Clinton Township Fire Headquarters, 42601 Romeo Plank Road, noon- 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9. Safety demonstrations, smoke house, spray the fire hose, light refreshments, free grab bags. Call 586-263-8437.

• Mount Clemens Fire Department, 2 Dickinson Street, noon- 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24. Safety information, equipment displays, free hot dogs, popcorn, cider and donuts.

•  St. Clair Shores Central Fire Station, 26700 Harper Avenue) noon-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10. Car-cutting demonstrations, fire equipment on display, free cider and donuts, courtesy of Firefighters Local 1744.

• Shelby Township Fire Station No. 1, 6345 23 Mile Road (between Van Dyke Avenue and Mound Road), 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9. Tours of the station, educational displays, Sparky the Dog, dunk tank with proceeds benefitting the Great Lakes Burn Camp.

Two children sent to hospital from smoke inhalation after Kelso house fire

A Tuesday fire displaced several families from a Kelso home and sent two children to the hospital due to smoke inhalation. Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue Public Information Officer Bryan Ditterick said the fire was likely started when a space heater or hot plate ignited items around them, but an investigation still is pending.
