Pipestone (MN)Fire Department to Get $700K Heavy Rescue Pumper

The purchase of a $704,748 heavy rescue for the fire department was approved by the Pipestone (MN) City Council, according to a story published by the Pipestone County Star.

The newspaper reported that individuals donated $100,000 to the purchase price and the Rural Fire Association would pay 25 percent of the total cost with the remaining $419,752 paid by the city.

The need for a new truck was identified last year during the budgeting process, but no funds were budgeted, according to the newspaper article. The donation helped accelerate the purchase and the city is looking at financing options to cover the rest of the purchase price, including a lease/purchase arrangement as it did when the city purchased a ladder truck in 2013.

The new rescue will replace a 1994 pumper and a 1999 rescue vehicle, the newspaper reported, noting that the former rescue vehicle might fetch $20,000 if sold.

The new heavy rescue will also have pumping capabilities with a 1,000-gallon tank and a 1,250-gpm pump, according to the newspaper. It will also carry grain bin rescue equipment, rope and trench rescue equipment an air bottle refill system, winches and extrication equipment, the newspaper said.

Peach County (GA) Fire Chief Says He Needs New Apparatus

The fire chief in Peach County (GA) says his department needs new fire engines as the ones now in service are old and dangerous, according to a report broadcast by WGXA News.

The report said Fire Chief Jeff Doles complained to the county commission that most of the Peach County Fire Department’s apparatus fleet is old and worn out with the newest engine being a 2009 with 87,000 miles on it. Another is a 2005 with 189,900, according to the report which also indicates that some of the apparatus in the fleet are more than 30 years old.

County commissioners said they were surprised by the chief’s request and state of the fire department and some laid blame for the deteriorated condition at the feet of the chief, saying he is responsible for maintaining equipment, budgeting and for keeping the commissioners informed, the television station reported.

The county has one new apparatus in the budget for next year, according to the report, but didn’t take any direct actions on the fire chief’s report and requests. The chief said during the meeting he just wanted his concerns to be part of the public record, according to WGXA.
