A fire at the Port of Ilwaco that sent plumes of black, hazardous smoke into the air Monday afternoon occurred as people in the fishing industry were preparing for Dungeness crab season to begin.
The Ilwaco Landing facility near the mouth of the Columbia River started burning around 12:30 p.m. Smoke could be seen for miles.

A crash involving a Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) fire truck was cleared after blocking the right and center lanes on I-90 near Sullivan Road in Spokane Valley.
According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), the crash happened at about 3 p.m. on Saturday.
SVFD said the car lost control because of icy road conditions and hit the truck.

Clark County Fire District 3 hosted its annual awards banquet last month and honored 11 emergency personnel for their outstanding service and dedication to the profession, each other and the community, according to a press release by the fire district.
Volunteer of the Year was Parker Ickert.
Parker joined District 3 in 2022 and successfully completed his internship in 2023.

Massive flames were seen shooting out of every window of a home on Second Street in Brownsville.
Captured video shows heavy black smoke and the intensity of that fire just minutes after it started.
"The house of origin was completely destroyed. The alpha and delta side exposures both suffered heavy damage," said Ron Barry, South Brownsville Fire Chief.

Through most of his career, Monterey Park Fire Chief Matthew Hallock would absorb the news of mass shootings with the discerning eye of a first responder, but with understandable detachment.
His department trained. He cared. His instinct was to think “what if it happened here.” But year after year, shooting after shooting, they never did.
