After 72 years of putting out fires, responding to crashes and helping out in medical emergencies, the largely volunteer-run town of Madison Fire Department flickers out Sunday.
The city of Madison Fire Department officially takes over fire protection responsibilities for town residents at midnight on Sunday in preparation for the eventual dissolution of the town of Madison in two years.

It feels like whenever I cough these days it triggers a mini-panic attack that I promptly try to quash with a steady stream of chamomile tea. Thankfully, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology say they figured out a way to gauge whether a person has COVID-19 just from the sound of their cough, so I may soon get to put my inner hypochondriac to rest.

A two-alarm fire damaged an apartment building and displaced 12 people on Sunday afternoon in Federal Way.
Fire crews were called to the 2500 block of South 317th Street.
Fire officials said two people were treated and released at the scene, and 10 adults and two children were displaced. No other injuries were reported.

Halloween is Jeremiah Lilly's birthday, and this year the Spokane Police helped the 4-year-old celebrate in a big way.
Over a dozen Spokane Police cars, several fire trucks, tow trucks, a motorcycle club and several other citizens hosted a drive-by birthday celebration for Jeremiah on his big day, according to Spokane Police Cpl.

A fire at a Lynnwood home Saturday afternoon caused heavy damage and displaced four residents.
South County Fire crews responded at 3:52 p.m. after dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting a house on fire at 61st Place West and 202nd Street Southwest. One man was home at the time. He was transported to the hospital by firefighters as a precaution for smoke inhalation.
