Defense Department Project Detects Change, Assesses Damage With Artificial Intelligence

In a project for the Defense Department’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), computer scientists have turned to artificial intelligence and aerial imagery to construct a detailed damage assessment solution. The tool can be used remotely and automatically to determine the amount of damage to buildings and structures from a natural disaster or catastrophe.

Former restaurant erupts in flames in Auburn

PHOTOS: A former restaurant erupted in flames early Tuesday, sparking a response from multiple fire districts. Crews rushed to the scene, in the 4500 block of "A" Street SE in Auburn, at about 6:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire in a commercial structure. Smoke and flames were pouring from the building when the first firefighters arrived.

Washington firefighter spends 5 weeks on ventilator after catching COVID-19 fighting Colorado's Cameron Peak fire

VIDEO: In August, when Jason Phillips came to Colorado to fight the Cameron Peak Fire, he didn’t expect to be here nearly four months later fighting the lingering effects of COVID-19. Phillips, who lives in Washington state, arrived in Fort Collins on Aug. 10 after months of already fighting wildfires in different parts of the country.

Selah firefighters deck out truck with Christmas lights, despite canceled parade

2020 has been a turbulent year full of cancellations, but that’s not stopping firefighters in Yakima County from keeping one of their special holiday traditions in tact. Each year, the Selah Fire Department covers a fire truck with Christmas lights for the annual Lighted Parade. However, this year the parade was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kennewick mother, two daughters displaced after fire damages home

A Kennewick mother and her two daughters are temporarily without a place to stay after a fire damaged their home Monday morning. According to Kennewick Fire Department Chief Chad Michael, the fire started at 119 East 6th Street. He said there was ‘substantial’ fire damage to a garage, the attic and the back side of the house.
