A firefighter battling a wildfire in Washington state near the Canadian border lost his wife and three children in an early-morning blaze that destroyed their new home.
The family's single-wide trailer was almost completely consumed when firefighters and sheriff's deputies responded to the Green Acres Mobile Home Park in Benton City, Washington, just before 1 a.

The Evans Canyon fire has grown to at least 69,920 acres and it is now at 10% containment, according to the Southeast Washington Interagency Incident Management Team.
As of Friday morning, at least 734 personnel battling the fire, especially 7 helicopters, 10 dozers, 10 water tenders, 17 hand crews, 79 engines.

In the last 20 years, the Spokane Valley Fire Department hasn’t had any women firefighters in the department. That changed this summer, when the department signed on two women firefighters as part of a group of 14 new recruits.
Fire Chief Bryan Collins said he’s been focusing on increasing the department’s diversity.

The report looks at how states are helping working and unemployed families during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is broken down into three categories: worker protections, healthcare, and unemployment support.

State forest managers are urging people to be careful with fires as they fan out across Washington state for a hot, dry Labor Day weekend.
“The risk that is out there because of human-caused fires is up tremendously,” said Washington State Forester George Geissler.
He said people who are new to the outdoors during the coronavirus pandemic need to be especially cautious, and everyone should take note of burn bans.
