Tacoma firefighters are responding to a brush fire that appears to have started in a homeless encampment in the 4800 block of South Burlington Way, at the site of the old Tacoma airport. No structures appear to be threatened. Crews say debris, tires, and a vehicle are still burning. Firefighters say they are working to contain the outer brush and grass fires and then will focus on the debris pile.

Nearly 1,000 firefighters have fought the Evans Canyon Fire with an impressive array of machines on the ground and in the air — at least 127 engines, 13 bulldozers, two tank-like skidgines, 21 water tenders, six helicopters and two airplanes. Joining them in the battle through the Yakima River Canyon is one of two specially equipped firefighting trains from BNSF Railway, both based in Washington.

A long-time Kennewick firefighter, who died of a rare blood cancer after serving on the frontlines following the September 11th attacks, will be honored in a procession on Saturday. According to the Kennewick Fire Department, Steven Bailie worked for their department for 33 years before his retirement.

VIDEO: A massive fire erupted early Thursday in Sanford when a gas line ruptured, prompting officials to evacuate more than 800 nearby homes. The fire broke out around 1 a.m. near Michigan Avenue and Oregon Street, west of I-4 near the St. Johns River. A ball of smoke and flames shot 100 feet into the sky for nearly two hours, with News 6 viewers saying they could see flames and smoke from miles away.
