Several fires ignite overnight in Central Tacoma, multiple investigated as arson

VIDEO: Residents in Central Tacoma are on edge after a series of fires broke out across the neighborhood on Sunday night, including two on the same residential property just hours apart. The Tacoma Fire Department says as many as eight small fires ignited overnight. They said between 7:30 p.m. and 8:40 p.m., crews responded to about a half dozen small fires within a small area. Then between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., firefighters put out two more small fires. The department said none of the fires caused any injuries or burned any homes or businesses.

The Tacoma Police Department is investigating at least three of those as arson. One of the fires erupted in the yard of a home on South 19th Street around 8:30 p.m., sending large flames into the air as the fence and large bushes in the yard ignited. “It just is like one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen,” said Rachel Aflleje, who lives at the home where two fires ignited in the same night. Before firefighters arrived, neighbors and people driving by rushed into the yard to help, some helping with buckets of water, hoses, and fire extinguishers.
