International Association of Fire Fighters launch virtual ‘Fill the Boot’ campaign

As the COVID-19 pandemic affects communities across the United States, it has also wreaked havoc on fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, according to the International Association of Fire Fighters. For 66 years, IAFF members have been standing on sidewalks asking passers-by to fill a firefighter’s boot with dimes, quarters, dollar bills, and more.

Crews bringing Anglin, Green fires under control in Central Washington

Firefighters are gaining the upper hand on two wildfires burning in north central Washington state despite the intense, record-breaking heat which has gripped the region, the State Patrol reports. The Anglin Fire, which broke out Monday afternoon about eight miles east of Tonasket, is now 50% contained and all mandatory Level 3 evacuation orders have been lifted.

Greenhouse Fire burns on as 105 degree temperatures approach

Three hundred personnel are still hard at work containing a wildfire covering over 5,100 acres west of the Colville Indian Agency, along Columbia River Road to Highway 155. Tuesday temperatures reached 101 degrees, the humidity dropped to 11% and wind gusts hit 28 miles per hour, according to a news release from the Northwest Incident Management Team.

Fire breaks out after train derailment, bridge collapse over Arizona lake

VIDEO: A second-alarm fire has broken out over Tempe Town Lake after a bridge collapsed and a train derailed near Farmer Avenue and First Street. Tempe fire officials say multiple train cars are on fire, with some carrying lumber. No injuries have been reported. Traffic near the area is being restricted near the lake and west of downtown Tempe, and Valley Metro light rail trains are being rerouted at Mill Avenue/3rd Street and 50th Street/Washington.

Two Studies Suggest 9/11 First Responders at Greater Risk of Dementia

World Trade Center (WTC) first responders are at risk for developing dementia, according to two studies led by Stony Brook University researchers and presented virtually at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference on July 28, 2020. The studies included individuals with signs of cognitive impairment (CI) who show neuroradiological abnormalities and changes in their blood similar to that seen in Alzheimer’s disease patients and those with related dementias.
