Christmas got a little brighter for six families in Richland thanks to the fire department. Firefighters came together and bought gifts for the families with money out of their own pocket.
"So these families are chosen either through churches, or through family friends or just someone is reaching out knowing someone is going through a hard time," said Peter Zukowski, a Richland firefighter.

Thirteen South County Fire recruits graduated from the Snohomish County Fire Training Academy during a ceremony last week at the Everett Performing Arts Center.
Jonathan “Todd” Bailey, Anthony Casanas, Brendan Cleary, Tracy Finch, Kyle Johnson, Everard Lewis II, Karl Long, Julian Markfield, Keanan Metcalfe, Daniel Nelson, Thomas Perillat, Ryan Scott and Michael Swanson were among 30 recruits from five county departments who successfully completed the intensive 14-week academy.

Moses Lake Firefighters and the Firefighters for Kids Foundation gathered Monday night to bring Christmas to more than 150 children.
Gifts, stockings, food, clothes and diapers were provided to 48 families in need at the Moses Lake Fire Station.
This is the third year Moses Lake firefighters and Firefighters for Kids have teamed up for the Christmas event.

The Southeast Thurston Fire Authority recently received a $10,000 donation from the Nisqually Tribe Charitable Fund that it plans on using for educational services, recruitment, training and protective gear for volunteer firefighters.

A nine-foot tree outside Fairfax County’s Public Safety Headquarters is not only celebrating the holidays but honoring those who served.
“The cumulative impact of stress from being a first responder starts to creep up on you,” said Fairfax County Police Chief Ed Roessler.
Two years ago, stress caught up with the Chief after some of his friends died in the line of duty and by suicide.
