The Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to a fire at the Bitterroot Apartments Wednesday night, which was extinguished by a functioning sprinkler system.
They received multiple calls of smoke and visible flames on the second floor of the apartments, with one caller speculating that it was a barbecue fire.

Firefighters are on the scene of a fire at an encampment under I-5 near Airport Way South and South Snoqualmie Street.
The fire is generating a lot of heavy smoke across the interstate, according to WSDOT. Motorists should expect traffic delays in the area.
There were no initial reports of injuries.

Assistant Chief of Operations Eric Andrews with the Snohomish County Fire District 7 is retiring after 44 years in the fire service. Andrews will serve his final day on Friday, Jan. 31.
“I know many fire department leaders proclaim how great their members are,” Andrews said. “But I can truly say I know of no agency, and I have seen many, that have more passionate fire service members than we have here are Fire District 7.

Three American firefighters died in a water tanker plane crash Thursday while battling wildfires in Australia, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed.
Rural Fire Service officials said they had located the plane, a C-130 Hercules, that crashed in the Snowy Monaro region of New South Wales state.
