New Jersey unions, city tussle in dispute over retiree payments

The labor unions representing Paterson’s police officers and firefighters are accusing the city of violating their contracts by not issuing accrued leave time payments to employees who retired since July 1. Administration officials said the city intends to make the payments eventually, but that checks have not yet been issued because of “a cash flow issue.

'Smoke Soldiers' pays tribute to firefighters in California

A North Bay man has written a song he hopes fire departments will adopt as an anthem. It's called "Smoke Soldiers," a three-minute rock ballad paying tribute to firefighters. And on Wednesday night, four Santa Rosa restaurants threw their support behind David Benjamin Gruenbaum of Santa Rosa 's effort.

29-year-old Vancouver man commended for saving family of 4 from burning car in Kansas

A sheriff's office in Kansas is calling a Vancouver man a hero after they say he saved a family from a burning car late Monday night. The Sheridan County Sheriff's Office said Yevgeniy Lomakin, 29, was traveling northbound on Highway U83, just north of Selden, Kansas, at around 11:50 p.m. when he saw flames coming from the undercarriage of a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am.

Morrow County man with dementia taken to hospital

An update on the case of the man with dementia who went missing in Irrigon: Jose Fernandez has been found. The Morrow County Sheriff's Office said Thursday afternoon Fernandez "has been located and transported to local hospital - we have no information on his condition at this time." The sheriff's office said more information would be released soon.

Train collides with UPS truck in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood

Emergency crews responded to a collision between a train and a package delivery truck at the edge of Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood Wednesday evening. According to the Seattle Fire Department, a train and a UPS truck collided in the 5500 block of Airport Way South sometime around 8 p.m. The fire department reports that they hit each other at low speed.
