‘Great Disaster’ occurred 125 years ago in Montana

Even in its earliest days, before the dawn of the 20th century, Butte had experienced tragedy. Six men died in a fire in the Anaconda Mine on Nov. 23, 1889. Fire swept through the Silver Bow Mine on April 21, 1893, leaving nine dead. But “Butte’s Night of Horror,” which occurred 125 years ago, was on an entirely different scale.

Barricaded man sets fire to Vancouver house

A man who violated a restraining order barricaded himself inside a Vancouver home then set it on fire, police said. The Vancouver Police Department said officers responded to a reported restraining order violation at 4 p.m. But when they got to the home in the 3200 block of NW Division Avenue, the suspect refused to come outside.

Winter storm impacts Whatcom County emergency response efforts

In addition to closing schools and canceling events, the winter storm is impacting emergency response efforts in Whatcom County. The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says the snow has slowed down the response times of Fire Service, Law Enforcement, and Emergency Medical Service. In combination with strong winds, the snow has caused many trees to fall, resulting in closed roads county-wide, with some areas still isolated.

Everett Firefighters Fight Chicken Coop Fire

Everett Fire crews responded Wednesday night to a report of a residential fire in the 8500 block of Holly Drive in south Everett. A passerby reported seeing smoke and flames shortly after 6 PM. The first arriving unit determined the structure on fire was not a human residential structure but a chicken coop.

Bill allows preemptive Washington state mobilization for wildfires

Washington’s state mobilization plan allows the use of state resources to suppress a wildfire when a blaze goes beyond the capacities of the local fire services. HB 2228, introduced by Rep. Larry Springer (D-45), would allow preemptive use of those resources if a wildfire is expected to require them.
