A man was taken into custody Friday after allegedly stealing an ambulance from a scene and taking it for a joy ride on Interstate 5 in southwest Washington. Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue crews responded to a report of breathing difficulties at a private home in Lexington, which is about 43 miles north of Vancouver, Wash.

Three people are without a home after an apartment caught fire early Saturday morning. The fire department rushed to the reported fire at the Brentwood Apartments around 7 a.m. According to Battlion Chief Mikal Barnett, the fire was reported on the first floor. They arrived and found heavy smoke coming from the single apartment.

An unknown problem 911 received leads to the response of the Walla Walla Fire Department. Dispatchers got a call after midnight on Sunday and heard yelling in the background. The call came from the area of Fifth Avenue and Sumach Street. Police got to the scene and found a four-plex up in flames. All of the families were evacuated.

A rain-soaked hiker clinging for 6.5 hours to a small ledge near the base of a tree 135 feet down a cliff at Watmough Bay on Lopez Island owes his rescue to the skills and preparedness of first responders. In a truly collaborative feat, Orcas Island and Lopez Island Fire departments joined forces last week when two hikers found themselves in danger on Chadwick Hill at Watmough Bay on the south end of Lopez Island.

A garage was destroyed in an overnight fire in Tacoma. Crews called to the 1000 block of North Madison Street early Friday worked to keep the flames from spreading to nearby homes. Witnesses reported hearing several explosions. At one point, flames were shooting out of the building’s roof, but firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garage.
