Merger in Snohomish County would make mega fire district with 162,000 residents

A bigger, better, faster and stronger fire district. That is what the fire chiefs of two local fire districts say a proposed merger would bring to their communities. On the Aug. 6 primary ballot is a proposal to merge District 8 in Lake Stevens into Snohomish County District 7, which serves more than 116,000 people from Mill Creek to Monroe and beyond.

Firefighters help rescue dog found stuck in tree in Port Orchard

PHOTOS: Firefighters with South Kitsap Fire and rescue helped rescue a dog that was stuck in a tree in Port Orchard on Friday. Officials said the dog climbed onto a fallen tree that was suspended about 25 feet in the air and could not get back down at South Kitsap Regional Park. Firefighters put a harness on the dog and carried her down a ladder by hand.

Cold Creek Fire almost out after costing nearly $1 million

The Cold Creek Fire will have cost nearly $1 million once put out -- but a fire official says it could have been worse. By 2 p.m. Monday, the fire -- which has burned an estimated 41,920 acres on the Hanford Reach National Monument since Thursday afternoon -- was about 90% contained, said Capt. Ron Fryer with the Southeast Washington Incident Management Team.

Spokane: Firefighters take to the air to combat wildfires

Whenever a fire starts, firefighters on the ground decide whether to call in air support, but are typically quick to do so to make sure fires don't get out of hand. The best case scenario is that an Air Attack plane arrives first, holding a former ground firefighter who can help call the shots and direct aircraft around the fire, essentially acting as an Air Traffic Controller from the sky.
