The Secaucus Fire Department, in Hudson County, N.J., placed a 28-foot Lake Assault Boats firefighting and rescue craft into service earlier this summer. The department’s firefighting and emergency response area includes a large portion of the Hackensack and Passaic Rivers (and their 28 bridges) that empty into Newark Bay and the Hudson River.

It was a hot, dry summer afternoon when Molly Linville glanced out her front windows and noticed a rare storm pushing down the narrow valley where she raises cattle.
Then came five lightning strikes in quick succession. And five plumes of smoke.
She thought things would be OK. She was wrong.
“I wasn’t as concerned as I should have been from the get-go,” Linville said.

In the fire and rescue service, positive outcomes after emergencies are rare — although treasured when they occurred.
Two South King Fire and Rescue firefighters recently received the Medal of Valor honor from the department for their exceptional efforts and successful water rescue of a female victim last October.

PHOTOS: At 3:27 p.m. on Friday, September 6 Orcas Island Fire and Rescue responded to reports of a structure fire in the 6300 block of Deer Harbor Road. Crews arriving on scene confirmed a large home completely engulfed in flames.
“The heat was incredibly intense,” shared Firefighter Ben Luna, who was first on scene.

In 1889, as the Territory of Washington was poised to become a state, a triple tragedy occurred. Seattle, Ellensburg and Spokane — all booming communities — burned to the ground in quick sequence, changing lives and the course of history.
