The surgeries were over, the life-threatening condition halted, and Tommy Spiotta headed out of Stony Brook Children's Hospital Tuesday — only to find a joyful surprise.
The East Patchogue 19-year-old — a fire department explorer and Special Olympics competitor — passed through the front doors of the hospital to applause and cheers from about 50 firefighters.

Two people were booked on suspicion of murder in connection with the disappearance of 28-year-old firefighter John Brian Mananghaya Aguila, West Covina Police announced Wednesday.
Elijah Thomas Rouse, 18, of La Verne and Shaun Cardarelli, 37, of San Gabriel were arrested on Tuesday and are currently being held in lieu of $1 million bail each.

A KIMA investigation uncovered a limited number of ambulances serving our area.
That shortage causing delays when you call 911.
Recently the Yakima fire chief spoke out, citing private ambulance companies prioritizing transports between hospitals over actual 911 calls.
Today, we went on a ride along with Advance Life Support, or ALS ambulance.

A brush fire in Kittitas County burned approximately 75 acres and crews are now mopping up as of 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office, the fire was burning approximately 75 acres as of 3:05 p.m. on Wednesday.
The blaze threatened ten structures. Crews have lifted all evacuations in the area and Parke Creek Road has been reopened.
