Easton (MA) Unveils New Fire Apparatus

Engine 12 was custom-built with stainless steel to fit into Easton’s Depot Street station, which it entered on Monday after experiencing the ceremonial “wet down,” a tradition that harkens back to a time before fire trucks even existed.

“Way back in the 1800s, when they had horses pulling fire pumpers, firefighters would wash both the horses down and the pumpers when they got back,” he said. “Because the horses couldn’t back up, the firefighters would manually push the fire pumper back into its stall.”

Eufaula (AL) Fire and Rescue Receives New Fire Apparatus

The new truck is a 2018 E-One Typhoon Rescue Pumper that came off the production line in January and has a 1,500 gallons per minute (GPM) pump. The truck can carry up to 1030 gallons of water to use to fight fires. It has a lot of compartment space, some stocked with slide out compartments trays to make the removal and replacement of emergency equipment easier on fire fighters. The truck is capable of carrying 5 pre-connect attack lines and large diameter fire hose in the separate hose bed, along with rescue equipment. It was purchased through Sunbelt Fire Apparatus, which is a dealer for E-One Fire Trucks for a cost of $424,000.00.

“We would like to thank our city government for understanding our needs in what it takes to provide our community the quality service that everyone deserves when it comes to fire protection,” commented EFD Chief Greg Holmes. “We are moving as quickly as we can to put the Fire Department's loss in our rear view mirror and looking to a positive future to be better than we were prior to March 3.”

Orcas Fire Department saves dog choking on broccoli

Firefighters do more than rescue a cat stuck in a tree. They also dislodge vegetables from a dog’s throat. When Chantelle Hildreth’s 9-pound toy poodle Tuffy started choking on a piece of broccoli late in the evening on March 22, she knew exactly what to do: the Heimlich. She had recently seen on Facebook how to do the maneuver on canines, so she gave it a go.

Lakeland, FL Firefighters Use New Equipment to Rescue Citizen from Muddy Ravine

Cody, WY, April 1st, 2019 – After receiving a 911 call, dispatch sent a Lakeland Fire Department rescue unit to respond to a fall victim in a 55+ mobile home community. While en route dispatch received additional information and the responders learned this wasn’t an average citizen lift assist call. While taking a walk the elderly citizen fell, sliding down a muddy embankment into a stream below. When learning of this unique rescue scenario additional resources, including Lt. Chilton’s Engine, were dispatched. “The rescue arrived first and determined the patient wasn’t injured, he just couldn’t get out of the situation he was in”, recounts Chilton. He immediately began thinking of resources they had that may help. Using a ladder wasn’t ideal because of the patient’s limited mobility, and carrying the patient on a backboard would be strenuous on his team and traumatic for the patient. That’s when a light-bulb went off and he remembered the Binder Lift had recently been added to his apparatus. “We were able to easily put it around him and used the handles to help him up the embankment” says Chilton, “it was a very simple, easy, and a safe way to get him out of there.”

Rescue Chief Shane Reynolds chairs the department’s physical health committee and they are always on the lookout for ways to make lifting patients safer for their firefighters. After being introduced to the Binder Lift by Assistant Chief Hartzog, Reynolds knew this was the solution they needed. Though they had Megamovers - a soft stretcher device used for carrying or dragging non-ambulatory patients - it fell short when used for lifting and assisting patients. “My goal is to give them a way to get better body mechanics when lifting all sized patients” said Reynolds. It is nearly impossible to lift with proper body mechanics when there is no handle to grasp, and unfortunately humans don’t come with handles. But now, Lakeland firefighters can bring their own.
